Hall of Fame.

Sheila McKenna of Attleboro was a member of the High Fives women’s basketball team which captured third place at the National Senior Games over the weekend.  McKenna, a former hoopster at Fairhaven High and at Bridgewater State, along with her teammates earned the bronze medal in the women’s 80 – 84 bracket. 

McKenna and the High Fives have competed on the national stage for the past 25 years and will be featured in a documentary on senior – citizen athletes.  The High Fives were the lone entry from New England, winning four of the seven games in which they competed.

FHS1958.com website has been in existence now for twenty four years.

I would like to express my thoughts now after twenty four years as to how the website started and why.  Hopefully you will find this of some interest.  When I retired in 1998 one day while doing a bicycle ride to Fairhaven I stopped and visited Bobby Botelho and found him in a depressed state so I invited him to lunch the following week.  We continued every week after but decided on doing breakfast and that’s how the Wednesday breakfast meeting started.  After a few weeks Teddy, Billy, Kenny, Dave, Joe and Dick Lomba started coming and as time went on many more came and eventually much to our liking the girls joined us and as I remember Judy, Sylvia and Phyllis were the first. 

I started the Website in the winter of 2002 and I posted it to the server in April.  My thoughts were with George Bergeron to do the site because the last time I saw George in 1998 was when he was here to attend the 40th class reunion and to meet his new grandson.  George and I spent a day together and we had talked then of how nice it would be for the class to have a Website.  My thoughts were for George and I to work on it together in our later years but my dear friend George passed away eight months later.  I met George in the ninth grade when he came from Saint Joseph's school, we became instant friends and we continued our friendship up to the day he died.  I think George's passing made me realize as to how precious our friends are.  Thinking of George and friends I decided to take on the project.

When the site was completed I showed it to Bobby Botelho for his thoughts and I showed it to my godchild Michael who is a tech guy to see if he had any suggestions.  Michael asked me why are you doing this and my reply was that I thought it would bring some of our old Fairhaven friends closer together or in touch with each other and doing the site made me happy.  Michael thought that was a good enough reason. 

After all these years I do feel the site has brought many of us closer together, not only the breakfast meeting every Wednesday but the many events we’ve held over the years such as the Highlander, the VFW, New Bedford Day in Florida, the reunions, the parties and cook outs we’ve had and the trips we’ve taken with classmates and many of our old friends.  In closing, today much of my sadness is that so many have left us now but I look back especially looking at the many pictures collected from all of those events and I think of how great all those times were and how grateful to have had them with such wonderful fantastic friends. 

So in saying this, I’m so thankful to all and so glad I did the FHS1958.com Website.

Our hats off to Sheila for a great job putting together the Breakfast reunion brunch.  Also thanks to Dave and Betty Jane for their help and our thanks to Peter Botelho for taking the pictures, much appreciated by all.  The brunch included the class members plus family and friends.  It was great seeing everyone and a good time as alway's.   _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
